Partnership Tips
We recently tried to form a working partnership with a large professional organization. After just a few meetings, it was clear they expected us to perform for them, providing them outcomes, before they would reciprocate. Of course, we quickly disengaged from further discussions.
This was, as are all such opportunities, a learning experience.
We once again got strong validation that partnerships are mutual and shared experiences. Each person or organization involved must know what is needed, and what is provided to the partnership. Each has to be candid about their expectations. Each must share such candor at the outset of the discussions. In this particular case, we really appreciated getting the potential partner’s expectations on the table early. We otherwise could have spent time and money pursuing a relationship that does not fit our definition of a true partnership.
What does this mean for you? Never go into a partnership blindly. Always get everything on the table right away. Know what you need from the partnership. Say so. Know what they need from the partnership. Have them state their needs plainly. Know what you are willing to contribute and make sure you know what the other partner will contribute. Quantify these contributions. Have measures of what you both get and what you both give. Expect misunderstandings. Don’t avoid them – deal with them. Use them to learn and to strengthen the partnership.
Above all, develop a high level of mutual trust. Mutual trust is what you have when both parties know what they can expect, and know that their expectations will be met.
Finally, measure your partnership outcomes. Tweak your partnership and continuously plan (GROW Model) to create greater wins.
