To Inspire You:
A Five-Day Spiritual Workout: Day 5 (the last in this series)
Today’s exercise helps you regain joy and enthusiasm.
Awaken the Child Within By Dr. Bernie Seigel
When I am with my grandchildren, I get so involved in all their activities that my energy seems endless. Of course, by the evening I am ready for an early bedtime, but the enthusiasm and joy of my grandchildren is contagious — they bring out the child in me.
Get in touch with the playful part of you. What did you enjoy doing as a child? What interested you? What games did you love to play? Don’t just visualize yourself doing those things, but get out your old games and play them again. Spend more time with children, go to playgrounds, ride a swing, go down a slide and awaken the child within you and let it communicate with the adult you are today. Ask your inner child what it wants to do. Inspiration restores you to life.
What awakens your spirit? Find a way to bring it into your life; if possible, make it the way you earn a living. If you do, you will never have to work a day in your life. At the very least, find the time in your life to have the time of your life.
Without the will to live, you will go nowhere. Decide what you want and go for it with an enthusiasm that all those around you can feel. You will make your inspiration contagious, believe me, and help will appear that you never expected. The journey is what it is about — not just the destination.

Partnership Tips
In the last two issues, we talked about “purpose” and “reason” as essential components of developing and sustaining business partnerships. This month, we will examine what goes into other parts of our proprietary GROW™ Model.
You may recall this Model as goals, roles, operating principles and winning for mutual benefit.
While purpose and reason are part of your goals and wins – shared purpose and reason are the foundations of the principles by which you run your business – this month we will explore more in-depth the “Goals” part of the GROW Model.
When you think about it, in a partnership, goals are not just what you have in mind, or what your partner has in mind – goals are what you have in mind together and in common with each other.
Here is the reality: In every partnership, there are goals each partner has separately, and there are goals you both share. It is the shared goals that make the partnership a partnership. There are two compelling considerations in this regard. The first is that individual goals may conflict with each other; but not at the expense of those goals that are shared. The second consideration is that neither party to the partnership can abandon or sacrifice shared goals in order to promote individual goals. If they do, the partnership will fail.
To show how this works in practice, we offer the following example:
Suppose you want to forge a partnership with another company whose customer-base is the same as yours. An example would be where you help small companies find and develop their own markets so they can expand and grow. You find a potential partner who sells a wide range of office supplies to the same small businesses with whom you do business. The two of you meet to discuss how you can work together. You have a goal of keeping your customers for a long time, as does the office supplier. This is a shared goal.
But you also have a goal of increasing the amount of consulting work you do with each of your clients. This means you need to get your clients to spend more of their business dollars on your services. This is an individual goal of yours, and not necessarily one your office supplier partner will support.
In fact, the office supply company has a very similar goal. As she assesses her current customer base, she realizes many of them are in need of office hardware and software upgrades. So, her goal is to convince her customers to budget money for upgrades and develops a plan to sell upgrades over the next six months. This is clearly an individual goal of hers that you may not share – since you are both competing for the same dollars.
Can the two of you find a way to serve your individual business goals and at the same time leverage your partnership to serve your shared goal of retaining your current client base for the long haul? You together decide to establish a “Client Respect” program whereby all clients that develop a long-term relationship with both of you get a substantial discount on products and services you both offer. Based on purchase history, you develop a proposal that clearly shows your clients they will get more by spending less on a unit price basis. Both you and your partner sell more over a period of time, thus meeting the shared goal you set together. And, your individual goals are met as well.
To recap:
We have defined an example of a shared goal, and two examples of an individual goal that conflicts with the shared goal. We have also talked about the commitment needed by all parties to the partnership that allows shared goals to continue to be pursued, even when conflicting goals exist.
While in many cases the goals (both shared and individual) will be much more complex than the example given here, in partnerships the principles are simple and elegant:
Ø Goals are not just what you have in mind, or what your partner has in mind – goals are what you both have in mind and in common with each other.
Ø In every partnership, there are goals each partner has separately, and there are goals you both share. The shared goals are the focus of the partnership.
Ø Individual goals may conflict with each other; but not with those goals that are shared and not at the expense of those goals that are shared.
Ø Neither party to the partnership can abandon or sacrifice shared goals in order to promote individual goals.
Ø The shared goal is more important to both parties to the partnership than are their individual goals.
