Partnership Tips
Last month we brought you an article about one of those “aha” moments experienced every once in awhile. This month is another of those.
Sometimes, we assume those with whom we forge personal or professional partnerships will conduct themselves with honor and integrity. Most of the time, doing this is perfectly okay because the longer a relationship lasts, the more secure and reliable is should become. Every now and then, however, you can get blindsided by behavior contrary to your expectations.
A recent incident shows how this can happen, and that you can learn a lot from such an experience.
A week or so ago we were involved in a hearing about whether a contractual provision entered into by two parties was to be properly interpreted – from the perspective of one or the other of the parties to the agreement. In giving testimony, one of the parties chose to provide false and patently unproven information about the motivations of the other. When this happens, what do you do about it?
We offer the following thoughts, and our experience tells us they are good to follow as a way to recover from such situations.
Ø Resist the temptation to respond in kind. Even if you ultimately lose, being honest means you ultimately win because the self worth you feel can never be taken from you.
Ø Resist the feelings of betrayal and anger you are experiencing. While they are probably justified, succumbing to them takes away the energy and focus you will need to prepare your honest response in defense of your position.
Ø Resist the notion that you are justified in talking about them and their behaviors with others in public. Inevitably, doing this will cause others to conclude you have something to hide or cover up and they will think less of you as a result.
Ø Stay singularly focused on your own goals. You need all your attention and energy to keep your eye on the prize – letting someone else control how you think and act gives them power over you.
Ø Finally, no matter what the ruling, take it in stride and look forward to figure out how to best accept a win with grace or a loss with dignity. In the final analysis, what will be, will be and your only best recourse is to make the best of the moment in which you find yourself.

Recently Don became a full-voting member of the Two Rivers Charter School Board in North Carolina. The decision was based on his expert contributions to the Board and their desire to have him step into a shared decision-making role with other members. Cited was his recent work to establish the Appalachian Foundation for Learning, a non-profit educational foundation serving the North Carolina high country.
We reported in an earlier newsletter that Don was also involved in writing a book with two other professionals in the educational arena. Most recently, Don and his colleagues met in New York City and developed a complete publisher’s prospectus which is being issued to various publishers as this issue of our newsletter goes to press.
