Today's exercise will help you extend your loving spirit to others.
Day 4: Say Something Nice
If you want to lift people off the ground — compliment them. Compliments are the helium that fills everyone’s balloon; they elevate the person receiving them so he or she can fly over life’s troubles and land safely on the other side, to be received with open arms.
When you motivate others with words of kindness, you will receive a surge of creative energy, too. I am not talking about giving false compliments to make someone feel better; I am talking about giving people the encouragement to face a challenge rather than submit to their fears. If someone you love is singing or performing in any way, your kind words can inspire the person to share his or her talents with the world. Sometimes it is the small things in life that truly help us to feel empowered. For this exercise, dedicate at least one week to giving out three genuine compliments a day, and watch how this changes the level of enthusiasm you feel toward yourself and others.
I carry pins with me that say “You Make a Difference” and give them to people I see acting in a way that is life-enhancing. Recently at the grocery store, I gave an employee a card I received as a valued customer. The card said she was special, and her smile rewarded me.
Also, remember to say thank you when compliments are sent your way. When we circulate our thanks and our compliments, the world becomes a better place.

Partnership Tips
Our article last month was about ‘purpose’. This month, we explore its sister – reason.
You have heard the expression “there is a reason for everything.” The word is also used to define the process of thinking and coming to a decision based on one’s conclusions. The American Heritage Dictionary defines it as “the basis or motive for an action, decision, feeling or belief”. Some interesting words in this definition, right?
Well, as it turns out, forming personal and professional partnerships for mutual benefit is driven by reason and is directly tied to the “W” in our GROW Model. It goes something like this:
You decide to pursue a business partnership with another person or organization. The basis for your decision – your motive – is because you know together the two of you can capture a bigger piece of the marketplace, or be more successful in some other way. Once you and your partner decide the partnership makes mutual sense, you act on your decision together. You ‘feel’ it is the right thing to do. You both firmly believe it is going to be successful. And, your decision was driven by reason.
Partnerships forged only by chance, or emotion, or even by feeling alone, without reason as the basis, run a very high risk of failure. As you have probably figured out by now, how you reason out your decision to partner is what makes you and your potential partner decide whether or not the partnership should be pursued. Not pursuing a partnership that does not make sense might be the best ‘partnership’ decision you will ever make! If you did not take the time to reason out all the ramifications of the partnership, do not be surprised if you are surprised later!
Forming partnerships is serious business. We cannot afford to do it haphazardly, or without careful planning. We need tools to help us decide. Such tools, properly used, will naturally drive us to the right decision.
We have three tools we use and we recommend:
The ASK Model – assessing the requisite attitude, skills and knowledge needed to form a successful partnership.
The GROW Model – building your partnership on the basis of mutual goals, roles each party to the partnership will play, the operating principles you both have developed and will live by, and finally, how you will assess and measure the wins you both will need to define the partnership as successful.
A good common-sense test we use as we develop relationships and make decisions is our RESULTS Model.
Good questions to ask are:
Ø Is it real? Will you and your partner see your partnership as something grounded in reality?
Ø Is it essential? Will it make a compelling, positive difference in your business?
Ø Is it sustainable? Over time and even with difficulties along the way, can your partnership be sustained?
Ø Is it undeniable? When you and your partner see it working, will you have no doubts about your decision?
Ø Is it leveragable? Can you both take your partnership to even higher levels of achievement?
Ø Is it tracked and measurable? Did you develop what your wins will look like and how they are measured?
Ø Is it solution-oriented? What caused the partnership in the first place? What challenge or opportunity were you both trying to meet? Does your partnership answer these questions?
We have developed the following formulation to express the relationship between ASK, GROW and RESULTS:
ASK x GROW = RESULTS: The EBG Model (where EBG stands for Exponential Business Growth)

Don has been asked to assume a position on the Board of the Two Rivers Charter School in North Carolina. His position is scheduled to be confirmed by the middle of this month.
In addition, Don has become part of a group developing a new book on how to create and manage joint programs of labor and management in unionized firms, with the potential for national and international impact. The project has already received funding and a Publisher’s Proposal will be submitted within the next few weeks.
